The following is a message from Deidre Buchner, Liberty Flotilla
Chair:
Message for the Liberty Flotilla Ships and Friends:
Imagine my pleasant surprise while watching CBS' Sunday Morning and there being a segment on nautical knot tying and the images of youth in "sea scout" chambray and the mention of a Ship from Connecticut, a brief glimpse of unit numerals "110" and then a close-up of National Boatswain Connor Rieve on screen with the correspondent and several loops of red line.
Ship 110-CT has been kind enough to send us the link to that segment now on the CBS News Website. Not sure how long it will be on-line so try to take a moment to watch the short segment today.

The national Sea Scouts, BSA Committee, and the United States Coast Guard Academy are proud to announce that the William I. Koch International Sea Scout Cup is August 1-7, 2010, at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut.
The sailing competition is open to Sea Scouts from all over the world and must be at least fourteen (14) years of age and less than twenty-one (21) years of age on August 1, 2010. The cost to the Sea Scout for his or her lodging, food, regatta uniform, and use of vessels is $180 for the week, which includes a $ 25 refundable key deposit at checkout.
To qualify to attend this event, any U.S. participant must be a registered Sea Scout and have qualified for the rank of Apprentice no later than January 1, 2010. If the Sea Scout desires to have a reserved spot, he or she must qualify their two-person team in one of the regional races listed on the Koch Cup Web site, www.seascoutcup.org. These qualifying races will take place this summer. Any Sea Scout who is Apprentice rank may apply after January 1, 2010, without attending a qualifying race and will be considered based on the date of the application and sailing experience.
Sea Scouts will be quartered at Connecticut College, which is across the street from the USCGA, and will receive their meals at the Academy. All races will involve the use of the Academy's FJ and 420 two-person sailboats.
Participants and staff should apply at www.seascoutcup.org.
For questions, please e-mail chairman@seascoutcup.org or call Jim Elroy, the

Going Boating? A Crew Safety Briefing Could Save Lives
National Safe Boating Week May 16-22
ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 29, 2009 - Having friends and family aboard is what boating is all about. But in an emergency could they quickly locate a fire extinguisher or provide accurate location information to rescuers -- without your help?
For National Safe Boating Week May 16 - 22, BoatU.S. Seaworthy magazine Editor Bob Adriance has developed a short Crew Safety Checklist. "Boating is supposed to be fun, so we do not want to unduly alarm our guests. However, every skipper should take a few minutes before they leave the dock to share these tips with crew." They are:
1. Life Jackets: Offer a correctly sized life jacket to those who wish to wear one, show guests where they are stored and how they are properly worn.
2. Fire Extinguishers: They should be easily visible near engine and galley areas. Take a moment to explain what types they are and how they are meant to be used. Point out any fire port locations for snuffing out engine compartment fires.
3. Flares: Show where they are located and how to safely activate without causing injury.
4. Engine and Fuel Shutoffs: Especially on sailboats, it's not always clear how to shut off the engine (usually by pulling out the "kill" knob).
5. VHF Radio: It's very important to familiarize the crew with its operation, how to make a radio distress call, and DSC one-button rescue mode (if equipped).
6. Battery Switch: Show the crew how to turn off power in case of an electrical fire.
7. Chartplotter, GPS, and Loran: At a minimum, crew should know to find a latitude/longitude position with these electronics. Pinpoint its location on the unit's screen. Have a paper chart aboard, show your crew where you're departing from and headed for the day.
8. Man Overboard Gear: Show where it is and give a brief explanation on how to use it.
To help boaters learn more about these and other safety related items, the BoatU.S. Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has an Online Boating Safety Study Guide at <<http://www.BoatUS.com/foundation/toolbox>>.

Kia Orana from the South Pacific !
Roy Masini and I have been working hard to get the celebration of Warington Baden Powell and the 100th Anniversary of the first activity for Sea Scouts (August 7th - 21st 1909).
We are pleased to report that all is going well and recently the District Commissioner for the area where the grave is sited at St. Andrews, Scotland has come on board which has been great. Jean has been busy with arranging a Church, a Minister to conduct the service (He is ex Navy !), meetings with the local Council who control the area where the grave is sited, home hosting and two Scout HQ's for somewhere for Scouts to sleep. We have had some great work done by Lt Com David Grffith the Naval inspecting officer for Naval Recognised Sea Scouts in UK and others who have assisted in many ways. Our thanks to them all.
Now is the time for all those from overseas to make plans to be there, mark the date and start planning- SUNDAY AUGUST 16th at St Andrews in Fife, Scotland commencing at 9am. More details will be released to those who send an email to me by 21st June their intention to attend.
We hope for a small Group of New Zealanders to be there as Hilda, Warington's wife was born in Auckland, New Zealand in September 1870 and she is also buried with Warington.
Come on everyone, let's hear from you.
Kind regards,
Kia Manuia,
Ron Bird

The web address for a free copy of "Cold Water Boot Camp" is http://www.coldwaterbootcamp.com/ . I showed the DVD to our scouts last night and I know I'll never get any arguments again about wearing PDFs. The website also has short video clips to download from their resource page to preview. I telephoned the Water Safety Congress and Brendan told me they would be delighted to send out free copies and would appreciate feedback.

The Odysseus Group is looking for a short slogan or motto that can sum up:
• 100 years of Sea Scouting;
• Friendship across the water;
• Pride in Sea Scouting.
The text should be short and in both English and French as it will be incorporated into the centenary badge. Entries will be voted on in the same manner as the badges.
Please send your slogan suggestion to the Odysseus Group at
sailerboy@bigfoot.com by December 1, 2008.
Other details
Handling of entries and intellectual property
All entries will be handled by the organizers and will not be returned. The intellectual property of the entries is owned by the participants. The organizers, however, have the right to publish, exhibit, print or distribute the entries through any media.
The badges will be manufactured and sold via the International Scout Shop and will be available from November 2009.
Both badges will be sold with a small surcharge. The money thus collected will be used to create a memorial to Warrington Baden-Powell.

100 Years of Sea Scouting Design Competition
At the recently held European Sea Scout Seminar it was decided to celebrate 100 years of Sea Scouting in 2010. To mark the event it was decided that we would have 2 badges – One, the centenary badge available to all Sea Scouts; and two, a friendship badge that while available to all Sea Scouts will have to be earned by participating in an international Sea Scouting event.
To find the best design for the 2 badges it was decided to hold a competition. Although this is a European initiative we welcome designs from anywhere. In December 2008 the badge design proposals will be put on the European Sea Scouting homepage <http://europe.seascout.org> and people will be asked to vote for their favourite design. We are not in the position to
offer any prize other than the honour that your design will be worn on thousands of uniforms through the world.
Badge requirements:
• Both badges should make a unified picture when they are joined together;
• There is no predetermined shape or size of the badges;
• The badges should use no more than 6 colours.
Centenary Badge:
• Should contain the words ‘Sea Scout’ in English and ‘Scout Marin’ French;
• Should include the World Scout emblem in one of its approved forms. See
• Branding Manual and World Scouting Brands manuals available as downloads
• from the World Scout Office homepage;
• Should show the years 1910-2010;
• There should be space for a motto in both English and French;
• Should be able to be used alone;
• Should be easily recognised as a Sea Scout badge.
Friendship Badge:
• Should contain the word “Friendship” in both English and French “Amitié";
• Should symbolise friendship across national borders;
• Should be easily recognised as a Sea Scout badge.
Please send your design proposal to the Odysseus group at
sailerboy@bigfoot.com by November 1, 2008.
Pictures should be in one of the following formats:
JPEG
PDF (photoshop 7)
*ESP (illustrator 10)
